COME ROLL MY HAIR

Back in the day, my grandmas would call me and my siblings into her room at any given time to grease their scalps and roll their hair. It was a bonding moment for them to relax and inevitably they would start talking. That was my version of “story time.” They would tell us stories about their childhood or the family, and we would ask questions getting the family’s “tea” or history one roller at a time. Those moments with our elders helped us to define our identity by reflecting on where we come from. Just like braided hair, our stories are woven together by knowledge that sometimes we can only get from hair rolling sessions with grandma. This series Come Roll My Hair is a journey, capturing stories of hair, dissecting its complexities, and healing through the discovery of hair and patterns.
